A young man in her classes always shyly looked away from her,

Though in the plays in college he could be a lover or devil-may-care.

He seemed a different person underneath those bright stage lights,

Her mother said he called her once but he never did again,

Though she waited by her window as the weekend came and went.

She looked for him on her TV but she never saw his name.

Now the years have left her stout and her blonde hair's turned to gray.
Has he too grown stout with age, all that dark hair flown away?
Does he still dream of Broadway or is he lost in some Twilight Zone?
She'll retire soon from teaching, leaving children not her own.

Diane sits at her window, dreaming of what might have been.

Feel free to perform this song in public, as long as you mention who wrote it. (A mention of the CD, Ancient Laughter, and the fact that it can purchased from www.cdbaby.com would be appreciated too.) If you want to record it, however, you will have to cross my palm with silver. My brother-in-law comes from Sicily.
