INTIMATIONS OF MORTALITY

by Grant Carrington

. . . . .

. . . . . In the far away the clouds were no different
though Caesar ruled where
angry mobs now gather
leaderless
Then there were no
laundromats
welcome mats
even wrestling mats
But the sky
blue
and gray
and white
and gold
was no different
nor the grass
nor the trees
Eternal
they stood then
as they do now

There was not then

even a hint
of my creation-to-come
not a germ
or a seed
to bear my likeness
or my unlikeness even
but lying dormant
I must have been
for here I am

And in the far away

the trees will be the same
and the grass
and the sky
but I
what will I be
will there be even
a hint
of my creation-now-gone
. . . . .
